Spivak, Petr Efimovich

Spivak, Petr Efimovich 

Born Mar. 11 (24), 1911, in St. Petersburg. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964).

Spivak graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1936. From 1936 to 1943 he was affiliated with the Leningrad Physicotechnical Institute; in 1943 he joined the staff of the Institute of Atomic Energy.

Spivak’s principal works deal with nuclear physics. He has carried out a large-scale investigation involving the measurement of nuclear and physical characteristics of fissionable isotopes. In weak-interaction physics he has conducted studies dealing with, for example, the determination of the half-life of the free neutron and measurement of the longitudinal polarization of electrons in beta decay.

Spivak received the State Prize of the USSR in 1953. He has been awarded two orders and several medals.
