Spivakovskii, Aleksandr Onisimovich 

Born Jan. 18 (30), 1888, in Ekaterinoslav, now Dnepropetrovsk. Soviet scientist in industrial transportation and the building of mining machinery. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

Spivakovskii graduated from the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute in 1917, and in 1919 he began teaching at the polytechnic and mining institutes in Dnepropetrovsk. In 1933 he became a professor and chairman of the department of mine haulage at the Moscow Mining Institute. He remained at the institute until 1973, and during these years he also worked at a number of scientific research and design organizations.

Spivakovskii’s works have been devoted to the modernization and mechanization of metallurgical and machine-building plants and to the materials-handling systems set up inside plants and underground and surface mines. He has also developed mechanized haulage systems for the mining industry. He is the author of works on the theory of transport machinery and of a number of textbooks.

Spivakovskii was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1947. He has also been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, four other orders, and various medals.
