Sporogonium

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus 0.01 sec.
Sporogonium

the sporophyte (asexual generation) of a bryophyte. A sporogonium consists of a capsule, stalk, and haustoria and is embedded in the tissue of the gametophyte (sexual generation), from which it receives nutrient matter. The capsules and stalks are capable of providing, by means of photosynthesis, part of the organic matter necessary for nutrition. The sporogonium develops from the zygote in an enlarged part of the female sex organ, that is, the archegonium. Spores form in the capsule from cells of the archespore as a result of meiosis. In many bryophytes (green mosses, some liverworts) the stalk of the maturing sporogonium elongates, placing the capsule in a favorable position for spore dispersal.
