In a prospective study of 660 HIV-positive Malawian adults, we diagnosed Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PcP) using clinical features, induced sputum for immunofluorescent staining, real-time PCR, and posttreatment followup. In the jar was the largest slimiest greenest blob of tenacious sputum I had ever seen. Researchers measured blood pressure, heart rate, and blood and sputum concentrations of the stress hormone cortisol before and after each test. |
