Tiwsab, Srbowhi

(pen name of S. Vaganian). Born 1841 in Constantinople; died there 1901. Armenian writer.

Tiwsab’s first works, published in 1880, were articles defending the new Armenian language. An adherent of West Armenian romanticism of the 1880’s, Tiwsab was attracted by the social ideas of George Sand. In her novels Siranoysh (1884), Araksya, or The Teacher (1887), and Malta (1883), she exposed the hypocritical moral principles and social contradictions of the bourgeoisie and supported women’s rights.
