St. Croix

St. Croix 

(in Spanish, Santa Cruz), an island in the West Indies, the largest of the Virgin Islands. A possession of the USA. Area, 207 sq km. Population, 31,900 (1970), primarily Negro. St. Croix is composed of limestones. Elevations on the island reach 354 m. Industry is represented by the manufacture of clocks and watches. There are sugarcane and laurel plantations on the island. Tourism is important. The main city on St. Croix is Christiansted.
