St. Elias

mountains in the cordillera system of North America, in the US (Alaska) and Canada. Length, 350 km; highest peaks, Mt. Logan (6, 050 m) and Mt. St. Elias (5, 488 m). The mountains are composed of granite and sedimentary rocks. Above 500 m are large areas of snow and névé fields, which feed large glaciers reaching to the ocean; a number of small glaciers come together at the foot of the mountains to form vast glaciers, such as Malaspina. Coniferous forests grow on the lower slopes of the mountains.
