On the central-eastern border of MO on the Mississippi River, 11 mi. below its confluence with the Missouri River. Organized 1812; original county. Name Origin: For Louis IX (1214-70), crusader king of France, canonized in 1297.

Area (sq mi): 523.69 (land 507.81; water 15.89). Pop per sq mi: 1978.40.
Pop 2005: 1,004,666. State rank: 1. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.10%; 1990-2000 2.30%. Pop 2000: 1,016,315 (White 76.00%; Black or African American 19.00%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 2.20%; Other 2.00%). Foreign born: 4.20%. Median age: 37.50.

    On the northeastern border of MN, bordered on the southeast by Lake Superior; established Mar 3, 1855 (prior to statehood) from Lake County (then called Doty County). Name Origin: For the Saint Louis River, which flows through the county; itself named for Louis IX of France (1215-70), who participated in the Sixth Crusade (1248-54) and was canonized in 1297.
