Stability of Bedding
the ability of the bedding of a structure to prevent soil from being forced out from beneath the base of the foundation as a result of loads transmitted by the structure. During the initial stage of critical loading, the soil becomes unstable only at individual points or in specific, limited areas of the bedding. In limit-state loading, the entire bedding loses its stability. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
