Stalagmite a sinter-drip, usually limestone formation that is columnar or conical in shape and rises from the floor of caves and other underground karst caverns. Stalagmites occur as the result of precipitation of calcium carbonate when the carbon dioxide is eliminated from the carbonate-saturated water dripping from above.
