Stamos, Theodoros (stăm`ōs), 1920–, American painter, b. New York City. Allied with the New York school of the 1960s (see modern art modern art, art created from the 19th cent. to the mid-20th cent. by artists who veered away from the traditional concepts and techniques of painting, sculpture, and other fine arts that had been practiced since the Renaissance (see Renaissance art and architecture ).

), Stamos draws much of his inspiration from Asian mysticism. He often creates a grainy, atmospheric surface with muted colors and calligraphic configurations in works that express the mysterious and insubstantial. His work is represented in New York City at the Whitney Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.
Stamos, Theodoros (1922–  ) painter; born in New York City. Based in New York, he studied at the American Artists School (1948–49), and traveled abroad. His abstract paintings are symbolic and biomorphic, as in Aegean Sun Box No. 2 (1965).
