Standing Bear, Luther (Chief Standing Bear, pen name) (?1868–?1939) actor, writer; born in Sioux Pine Reservation, N.D. He left the reservation for a tour with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, then returned to the reservation. He became a U.S. citizen, settled in Huntington Park, Calif., and worked as an actor. He was a transitional Native American figure who was interested in capturing on paper the beliefs and customs of his people, as well as the difficulties of adapting to white America. He is best known for his autobiography, My People, My Sioux (coauthored with E. A. Brininstool, 1928), and Stories of the Sioux (1934). How to thank TFD for its existence?
