In central CA, E of San Francisco; organized Apr 1, 1854, from Tuolumne County. Name Origin: For the Stanislaus River, the baptismal name of an Indian leader who fought bravely there. John C. Fremont (1813-90) used the anglicization of Spanish Estanislao.
