Stanislav Rostotskii

Rostotskii, Stanislav Iosifovich 

Born Apr. 21, 1922, in Rybinsk. Soviet film director. People’s Artist of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1951.

Rostotskii fought in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. In 1952 he graduated from the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, where he studied in S. M. Eisenstein’s and G. M. Kozintsev’s workshop. He became a director in the Gorky Central Studio for Children’s and Young People’s Films.

Rostotskii directed Land and People (1956), It Happened in Pen’kovo (1958), May Stars (1959; in collaboration with Czechoslovak cinematographers), On Seven Winds (1962), and A Hero of Our Time (1967; based on Lermontov’s novel). The film Let’s Live Till Monday (1968) was an important achievement, winning a State Prize of the USSR (1970) and a Gold Prize at the Sixth International Film Festival in Moscow (1969). In 1972, Rostotskii directed The Dawns Here Are Quiet (State Prize of the USSR, 1975). He has been awarded two orders and several medals.
