Matthews, Stanley (1824–89) Supreme Court justice; born in Cincinnati, Ohio. An ardent abolitionist, he served as U.S. attorney general in Ohio (1858) and in the U.S. Senate (Rep., Ohio; 1877–79). The Senate rejected his first nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court but approved a second nomination by President Garfield (1881–89).
