a lake between the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaïre) and Congo-Brazzaville, formed by a widening of the River Congo. Area: 829 sq. km (320 sq. miles)

Stanley Pool

(Malebo), a lakelike expansion of the middle Congo (Zaire) River, immediately above the valley through which the river discharges into the coastal South Guiñean Highland. Stanley Pool is about 30 km long and up to 25 km wide and has an area of 555 sq km and a maximum depth of 25 m. Bamu Island divides the pool into two arms with tiny islands and sandbars that are flooded at high water. At the southwestern tip of Stanley Pool, Kinshasa, the capital of Zaïre, is located on the left shore and Brazzaville, the capital of the Congo, on the right shore; both cities are important river ports.
