Stans, Maurice Hubert (môrēs` hy `bərt stănz), 1908–98, U.S. government official, b. Shakopee, Minn. He worked as an accountant for many years before serving in the Eisenhower administration as deputy postmaster general (1955–57), deputy budget director (1957–58), and director of the budget (1958–61). Stans later became (1969) secretary of commerce under President Richard M. Nixon, but resigned (1971) to work as finance chairman for Nixon's reelection campaign.
