On the southwestern border of KS, southwest of Garden City; created Mar 6, 1873, later abolished and made part of Hamilton County; in 1887 Stanton County was reorganized from Hamilton County. Name Origin: For Edwin McMasters Stanton (1814-69), U.S. Attorney General (1860-61) and U.S. Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson (1862-68).

Area (sq mi): 680.06 (land 680.00; water 0.06). Pop per sq mi: 3.30.
Pop 2005: 2,245. State rank: 100. Pop change: 2000-20005 -6.70%; 1990-2000 3.10%. Pop 2000: 2,406 (White 74.00%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 23.70%; Asian 0.20%; Other 14.80%). Foreign born: 12.70%. Median age: 33.80.
