Stashkov, Nikolai Ivanovich

Born Apr. 2 (15), 1907, in Odessa; died Jan. 26,1943. An organizer of the partisan movement in the Ukraine during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45. Hero of the Soviet Union (May 2,1945; posthumously). Member of the CPSU from 1931.

The son of a worker, Stashkov fought in the Red Army at the engagements near Kakhovka and Perekop in 1920. From 1927 he was a metalworker at the Spartak Plant in Dnepropetrovsk. From 1933 to 1935 he did Komsomol work at a machine-tractor station. From 1938 to 1941 he served in the Red Army. From August 1941 he was first secretary of the underground Dnepropetrovsk oblast committee of the CP(B) of the Ukraine. On July 28, 1942, he was arrested by the fascist German invaders and, after being cruelly tortured, was shot. A stele with his portrait in bas-relief has been erected on Stashkov Boulevard in Dnepropetrovsk.
