Dixiecrat

 or States' Rights Democrat

In the U.S., member of a right-wing Democratic splinter group in the 1948 election. Organized by Southerners who objected to the Democrats' civil rights program, the Dixiecrats met in Birmingham, Ala., and nominated Gov. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina for president. He received more than one million votes in the 1948 election and won four states.

Referring to Thurmond's 1948 presidential bid as the nominee of the States' Rights Party (which defended state-imposed segregation of the races), Lott suggested that if Thurmond had won the presidential race, then "we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years.
Thurmond didn't lead the Southern revolt at first, but after several state delegations bolted from the party's Philadelphia convention, the South Carolina governor seized the banner of the States' Rights Party and carried it with gusto.
