Clinton. 1 Town (1990 pop. 12,767), Middlesex co., S Conn., on Long Island Sound; settled 1663, set off from Killingworth and inc. 1838. The school that later became Yale Yale University, at New Haven, Conn.; coeducational. Chartered as a collegiate school for men in 1701 largely as a result of the efforts of James Pierpont, it opened at Killingworth (now Clinton) in 1702, moved (1707) to Saybrook (now Old Saybrook), and in 1716 was 2 City (1990 pop. 29,201), seat of Clinton co., E central Iowa, on the Mississippi, in a corn and livestock area; inc. 1859. An industrial and rail center, it has food-processing (especially corn) and diverse manufacturing industries. Clinton grew as a lumbering town and in the 1880s was a great sawmill center in the Midwest, but the forests were depleted. Clinton 1.
