On July 20, 1944, Colonel Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg, a Catholic, and three others carried a bomb into Hitler's bunker in East Prussia intending to kill him, but it misfired and Hitler escaped death. Count Klaus von Stauffenberg plotted the assassination of Hitler here during the dark days of World War II, and it was in the Bendlerblock's courtyard that the co-conspirators were executed. On another evening, Sidey was due at the Chevy Chase Club for a dinner in honor of Count von Stauffenberg. |
