Stauning, Thorvald

Born Oct. 26,1873, in Copenhagen; died there May 3,1942. Danish state and political figure.

Stauning became a member of the Social Democratic Party of Denmark (SDPD) in 1896 and served as chairman from 1910 to 1942. From 1905 to 1942 he was a deputy to the Rigsdag, representing the SDPD, and from 1910 to 1929, except for the period 1924–26, he was chairman of an SDPD faction in the Rigsdag.

In 1913, from 1916 to 1918, and in 1920, Stauning was a member of the government. During World War I (1914–18) he was a Social Chauvinist (see V. I. Lenin, Poln. sobr. soch., vol. 30, pp. 193–95). Stauning served as prime minister from 1924 to 1926, from 1929 to 1940, and from 1940 to 1942. Under Stauning, diplomatic relations were established between Denmark and the Soviet Union in 1924. During the 1930’s, a series of social reforms was carried out and significant economic privileges were granted to the agrarian bourgeoisie.

After the occupation of Denmark by fascist Germany in April 1940, Stauning actively supported cooperation with the Hitlerites.
