Luchian, Stefan
Born Feb. 1, 1868, in the village of Stefanesti, in Boto§ani Province; died June 28, 1916, in Bucharest. Rumanian painter. Luchian studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest under T. Aman and G. Tattarescu (1885-89), at the Academy of Arts in Munich (1889-90), and at the Académic Julien in Paris (1891-92). Influenced initially by N. I. Grigorescu, he was later influenced by impressionism and the traditions of folk art. Luchian painted intimate portraits of common people and addressed himself to the theme of social protest (The Sharing of Corn, 1905-06, Museum of Art of the Socialist Republic of Rumania, Bucharest). In his landscapes and still lifes he achieved brilliant color and strove for clear and simple composition (Anemones, 1908, Museum of Art of the Socialist Republic of Rumania).
