Stein, Leo

    0.01 sec.
Stein, Leo (Daniel) (1872–1947) art collector, critic; born in Allegheny, Pa. (brother of Gertrude Stein). He studied at Harvard (1892–94), and Johns Hopkins (1897), then moved to Paris (1902). His sister, Gertrude, lived with him beginning in 1903, and they began collecting paintings by such contemporary artists as Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. By 1912 he and his sister parted company and he returned to America to work as a journalist. He and his wife settled near Florence, Italy (1921). His writings include Appreciation: Painting, Poetry, and Prose (1947). He is remembered as an influential promoter of 20th-century paintings.
