Other industries include sawmilling and the manufacture of bricks and tiles. Stellenbosch, founded in 1680, is the oldest European town in South Africa after Cape Town. The Univ. of Stellenbosch, a theological seminary, a technical college, and a teachers college are in the city.

a Lower Paleolithic archaeological culture of South Africa. The culture was named after the city of Stellenbosch, near which stone implements of the culture were found. The Stellenbosch followed the Olduvai culture and preceded the Fauresmith culture. Today, the term “Stellenbosch” is regarded as obsolete and has been replaced by the term “Chelles-Acheul of South Africa” or by the term “Abbeville-Acheul of South Africa.”
