Stenness, Loch of (stĕnĕs`), lake on Mainland island, in the Orkneys, off N Scotland. An isthmus between Harray and Stenness lochs holds the Standing Stones of Stenness, two rings of flat tablets dating from before c.2500 B.C. One had 12 stones, of which 2 remain standing. The larger, the Ring of Brogar (or Brodgar), had approximately 60 stones, of which 36 remain. How to thank TFD for its existence?
