Step Voltage

    0.01 sec.
Step Voltage

a voltage that is caused by a current flowing in the ground or in a conducting floor and is equal to the potential difference between two points on the surface of the earth or of the floor that are separated by a distance of one pace. The magnitude of a step voltage depends on the current and on the resistivity of the ground or the floor.

Hazardous step voltages may be produced near the grounding conductors of electrical installations when a ground fault occurs. Therefore, permissible values of the resistance of grounding conductors and the resistivity of the ground are set by standards.

The coulomb's function of an electrometer can be used with a step voltage source to measure capacitance levels ranging from <10pF to hundreds of nanofarads.
[FIGURE 1 OMITTED] The initial voltage distribution for a equal to 6, 12 and 18 for step voltage input at line terminal with neutral end of winding grounded is obtained using the equation [1]: [[epsilon].
