Iaremich, Stepan Petrovich 

Born July 22 (Aug. 3), 1869, in the village of Galaiki, in what is now Kiev Oblast; died Oct. 14, 1939, in Leningrad. Soviet art critic and painter.

Iaremich studied painting at the painting school of the Kiev-Pecherskaia Laura from 1882 to 1887 and at N. I. Murashko’s Kiev School of Drawing from 1887 to 1894. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1900 and lived abroad, mainly in Paris, from 1904 to 1907. He took part in the World of Art exhibitions and was a member of the Union of Russian Artists.

Iaremich’s principal paintings were landscapes; they include architectural views of St. Petersburg and Venice. Beginning in 1900 he published articles on Russian and Western European art; he was a connoisseur and a collector of Western European drawings. Iaremich became the head of the division of drawings of the Hermitage Museum in 1918 and head of the museum’s restoration studio in 1930.
