1. George. 1781--1848, British inventor of the first successful steam locomotive (1814); constructed the first railway line to carry passengers, the Stockton and Darlington Railway (opened 1825)
2. his son, Robert. 1803--59, British engineer, noted for his construction of railway bridges and viaducts, esp the tubular bridge over the Menai Strait
