Perturbation of sodium channel function by pyrethroids is stereospecific (Lund and Narahashi 1982); those stereoisomers that are the most potent disruptors of VSSC function also have the most potent insecticidal or toxicologic activity (Ray 2001).
More familiar to chemists are geometric isomers, in which the same atoms arrange in different spatial patterns, and stereoisomers, in which atoms arrange range in different orientations around an atomic hub.
