Stevens, Edwin Augustus

Stevens, Edwin Augustus (1795–1868) engineer, financier; born in Hoboken, N.J. Son of John Cox Stevens, he managed his father's business for many years but he was also interested in armored coverings and their application to naval warfare. One of the boats he outfitted, the Naugatuck, attacked the Merrimac during the Civil War. Stevens ran the Camden & Amboy Railroad from 1830 until his death. He provided the land and money for what became the Stevens Institute of Technology.
