Stevens, Isaac Ingalls

Stevens, Isaac Ingalls (1818–62) soldier, public official; born in Andover, Mass. He was an army engineer in the Mexican War and was governor of the Washington Territory (1853–57). He directed the exploration for the Pacific Railroad surveys and ruthlessly suppressed an Indian rebellion within the Territory (1855). He served in the House of Representatives (Dem., Washington Territory; 1857–61) and, as a Union brigadier general, was killed in the Civil War.
