On the northeastern border of WA, northwest of Spokane; original county. Organized 1854 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Gen. Isaac Ingalls Stevens (1818-62), an officer in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War; first governor of WA Territory (1853-57).

On the southwestern border of KS; organized Mar 6, 1873 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Thaddeus Stevens (1792-1868), U.S. representative from PA (1849-53; 1859-68) who strongly opposed slavery.
