Stevenson, Adlai E. (Ewing) (1835–1914) vice-president, politician; born in Christian County, Ky. (grandfather of Adlai Stevenson). As first assistant postmaster (1885–89), he supported patronage and fired thousands of people. As vice-president during Grover Cleveland's second term (1893–97), he made many friends and presided gracefully over the Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for the vice-presidency in 1900 and the governorship of Illinois in 1908. How to thank TFD for its existence?
