Stevenson, James

Stevenson, James (?1929–  ) cartoonist, writer; born in New York City. He graduated from Yale and was a reporter for Life magazine until 1955. From 1956 to 1963 he was a cartoonist and writer for the New Yorker. Thereafter he illustrated and wrote numerous books for children, such as Could Be Worse! (1977), and Worse Than Willy! (1984). He lived in Connecticut.

Stevenson, James (1840–88) explorer, ethnologist; born in Maysville, Ky. He joined the U.S. Geological Survey and, with Dr. Ferdinand Hayden, explored the Missouri, Columbia, and Snake Rivers to their sources. He participated in the Yellowstone region survey (1871) and was probably the first white man to climb the Great Teton (1872). After 1879 he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Ethnology; he studied the languages and customs of the Blackfeet, Navaho, Zuni, Hopi, and Pueblo Indians, and he collected and catalogued a great deal of their cultural materials.
