Stieltjes, Thomas Jan 

Born Dec. 29, 1856, in Zwolle, Overijssel;died Dec. 31, 1894, in Toulouse, France. Dutch mathematician.

Stieltjes graduated from the Polytechnic School of Delft and was a staff member of the Leiden Observatory from 1877 to 1883. He became an instructor at the University of Toulouse in 1886 and subsequently was made a professor at the university.

Stieltjes’ principal works were devoted to the theory of continued fractions, the problem of moments, the theory of orthogonal polynomials, approximate integration, and other problems of classical analysis. He arrived at a generalized concept of the integral, called the Stieltjes integral (seeINTEGRAL).

Stieltjes became a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1894.
