Stikine (stĭkēn`), river, 335 mi (539 km) long, rising in the Stikine Mts., NW British Columbia, Canada. It flows in an arc west and southwest, crossing SE Alaska, to the Pacific Ocean N of Wrangell Island. It is navigable for c.130 mi (210 km) upstream. It has cut deep gorges in the Coast Mts. The Stikine was one of the routes during the Klondike gold rush (1897–98). It is now a chief route to the Cassiar mining region of N British Columbia. The river is a noted salmon stream. Today, Y2Y boasts more than 280 affiliated groups, ranging from the large and established such as the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society to smaller coalitions such as the Alberta's Bow Valley Grizzly Bear Alliance in Alberta and Friends of the Stikine (River) Society in based in Victoria, British Columbia. The cruise includes an excursion to Wrangell, a waterfront community near the mouth of the Stikine River, whale-watching through Frederick Sound, and visits to Misty Fjords, Wrangell Narrows, Glacier Bay, Tracy Arm Fjord and port calls in Sitka, Haines and Skagway. Alkalic igneous rocks are well-represented in British Columbia in the co-genetic Stikine and Quesnel Terranes, which together host the gold-rich porphyry copper deposits of Afton, Mt Polley, Galore Creek, Kemess and Mt Milligan. |
