Still, Andrew Taylor, 1828–1917, founder of osteopathy osteopathy , practice of therapy based on manipulation of bones and muscles. This school of medicine, founded by A. T. Still in 1874, maintains that the normal body produces forces necessary to fight disease and that most ailments are due to "structural derangement"

He evolved the theory that all diseases and physical disorders ultimately derived from dislocations (which he called subluxations) of the vertebrae and that specific manipulations and massage—not drugs—could remedy any illness. In 1892 he founded a school of osteopathy in Kirksville, Mo.
