Stillé, Alfred

Stillé, Alfred (1813–1900) physician; born in Philadelphia. After completing his medical studies in Europe, he practiced in Philadelphia and taught at the Pennsylvania Medical College (1854–59) and the University of Pennsylvania (1864–83). A founder of the American Medical Association (1847), he was also a prolific writer. His Elements of General Pathology (1848) was the first American text on pathology, and his Epidemic Meningitis or Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (1867) was a pioneering work on this subject.
