Stock, Frederick August (1872–1942) conductor; born in Jülich, Germany. Trained in Germany, he came to the U.S.A. and in 1895, a protégé of Theodore Thomas, joined the Chicago Symphony as a viola player. He succeeded Thomas as conductor in 1905 and served until his death, making the orchestra a major cultural force for the whole Midwest through its educational programs and varied repertoire. |
