Stockholm, University of
the largest university in Sweden, founded in 1877. As of 1975, it comprised the faculties of law, humanities (departments of history and philosophy and of linguistics), and social and natural sciences (departments of physics and mathematics, of chemistry, and of biology and geography); affiliated institutes of economic history, world economics, applied psychology (in Solna), social research, and the Wenner-Gren Institute for Experimental Biology; and an institute for students from English-speaking countries. The university also has an international graduate school and offers preparatory courses and Swedish-language courses. In the 1974–75 academic year the university had 25,000 students and more than 700 instructors, including 180 professors.
