Stockport, city and metropolitan district (1991 pop. 276,800), W central England, located in the Manchester metropolitan area on the slopes of a narrow valley at the head of the Mersey River. The ravine is crossed by a high railroad viaduct built in the 19th cent. Engineering and cotton textiles are the largest industries; clothing and electronics are also manufactured. There are a 14th-century church and a grammar school founded in the 15th cent. Vernon Park has a museum. Richard Cobden represented Stockport in Parliament from 1841 to 1847.

Stockport

City and metropolitan borough (pop., 2001: 284,544), northwestern England. First chartered in 1220, the original settlement was built in a gorge where the Rivers Tame and Goyt meet to form the River Mersey; the modern town has spread over higher ground. Cotton spinning was important in the 19th century; in the 20th century diversification brought electronics and heavy engineering industries. Part of the metropolitan area of Greater Manchester, the metropolitan borough includes, in addition to Stockport proper, the urban area of Cheadle, the towns of Bramhall, Romiley, and Marple, and areas of open countryside.

Situated at the confluence of the sources of the Mersey, Tame, and Goyt rivers, Stockport produces machine tools, internal-combustion engines, equipment for the textile industry, chemicals, cotton yarn, and hats.
