1. a former port and industrial centre in NE England, in Stockton-on-Tees unitary authority, Co. Durham, on the River Tees: famous for the Stockton-Darlington Railway (1825), the first passenger-carrying railway in the world; now mainly residential. Pop.: 80 060 (2001) 2. a unitary authority in NE England, in Co. Durham and North Yorkshire: created in 1996 from part of Cleveland county. Pop.: 186 300 (2003 est.). Area: 195 sq. km (75 sq. miles) Stockton-On-Tees a city in Great Britain, in the county of Cleveland, near the mouth of the Tees River. Population, 162,500 (1974). Stockton-on-Tees is a transportation junction and seaport on the North Sea. The city’s industries include ferrous metallurgy and the production of industrial equipment and locomotives.
