Stokes, Carl (Burton) (1927–  ) mayor, judge; born in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as assistant city prosecutor (1958–62), state representative (1963–68), and as mayor of Cleveland (1968–72), the first African-American mayor of a major U.S. city. He worked as a television anchor (1972–80) and he became a judge in the Cleveland Municipal Court (1983).
