Stomma, Zdislav Frantsevich 

Born Aug. 4 (17), 1907, in Minsk. Soviet Byelorussian actor. People’s Artist of the USSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1963.

Stomma graduated from the drama studio of the Polish Theater of the Byelorussian SSR in Minsk in 1929. In the same year he joined the theater’s company; he later joined the company of the Polish Theater of the Ukrainian SSR in Kiev. In 1940 he became affiliated with the Ia. Kupala Byelorussian Theater in Minsk.

Stomma is a master of comedy. He has created memorable characters full of folk humor. His best roles have included By-kovskii in Kupala’s Pavlinka, Levon Chmykh in Makaenok’s Levonikha in Orbit, Glushak Khalimon in Melezh’ People in the Marshes, Karavkin in Krapiva’s The Gates of Immortality, Belo-gubov in Ostrovskii’s A Profitable Post, Epikhodov in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, and Glapiex in Hugo’s A Thousand Francs Reward. Stomma has appeared in motion pictures since 1949.

Stomma was a deputy to the seventh convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Byelorussian SSR. A recipient of the State Prize of the Byelorussian SSR in 1966, he has also been awarded two orders and various medals.
