Stone Mountain Memorial, memorial to the Confederacy, consisting of the equestrian figures of Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis carved on the northern face of Stone Mt., a granite dome 650 ft (198 m) high in NW Ga., NE of Atlanta. The memorial was commissioned by the Daughters of the Confederacy in 1916 and was designed and partially executed by Gutzon Borglum Solon Hannibal Borglum, 1868–1922, was also a sculptor, noted especially for his portrayal of horses, cattle, Native Americans, and cowboys.

In 1925, sculptor Augustus Lukeman took charge of the project. Work stopped in 1930 and was not resumed until 1963, when the state of Georgia purchased the mountain and established a state park.
