start-stop system [′stärt ′stäp ‚sis·təm]
(communications)
A telegraph system in which each group of code elements corresponding to a character is preceded by a start signal that prepares the receiving mechanism to receive and register a character, and is followed by a stop signal that brings the receiving mechanism to rest in preparation for the reception of the next character.

The switch from electric motor to petrol power and back again is a seamless affair and the stop-start system equally smooth and simple.
The Ecomatic was definitely ahead of its time and never caught on but today stop-start systems are all the rage, and one of the latest to adopt it is Land Rover with its Freelander 2.
And that's due in part to the four-cylinder turbo diesel engine, mated with the new stop-start system.
