store and forward The temporary storage of a message for transmission to its destination at a later time. Store and forward techniques allow for routing over networks that are not accessible at all times. For example, messages crossing time zones can be forwarded during daytime at the receiving side, or messages can be forwarded at night when there is less traffic. See messaging protocol.store and forward [′stȯr ən ′fȯr·wərd] (communications) A procedure in data communications in which data are stored at some point between the sender and the receiver and are later forwarded to the receiver.
