In southwestern NV, east of Reno; original county; organized Nov 25, 1861 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Capt. Edward Faris Storey (?-1860), army officer killed by Paiute Indians at Pyramid Lake.

Area (sq mi): 263.80 (land 263.45; water 0.34). Pop per sq mi: 15.50.
Pop 2005: 4,074. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 19.90%; 1990-2000 34.60%. Pop 2000: 3,399 (White 90.00%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 5.10%; Asian 1.00%; Other 5.60%). Foreign born: 2.20%. Median age: 44.50.
